Speaking of Steve Hackett, "Highly Strung" has some fine drumming from Marillion's Ian Mosley.
I liked how Phil played his OWN style on his OWN setup...he was really unique and made it work.
That concert tom kit, the Gretsch, sounded so cool...floor toms from hell.
I seem to recall reading somewhere a long time ago that Phil bashed Carl Palmer for being too stiff.
I really dug Palmer back in the day...but now, it's hard to listen to...i really dig ELP, but, & no off, but he's like Rich on meth; really herky-jerky, helter-skelter...lotsa lix 4 lix' sake, it would seem now...super-sized, hyper big-band solo accompaniment drumming" to everything [except maybe some of the Asia pop stuff]...chops fills 4 d sake of chops fills; kinda 1 dimensional [AOT, say, Weckl - i know, 2 completely diff styles of drummers], if u know what i mean...
In rock/popular[!], Neil was as some of u say...parts, w themes/fills/beats building on themes successively...in this way, & i dare say/be so bold - [& one can just hear Rush "gnashing their collective teeth" at this- they used to HATE the notion of "pop"] - he was indeed a great "pop" drummer, so to spk...

Yeah, I still like listening to old ELP for the drumistics, but his time was AWFUL.
On Tarkus, the guy was all over the place...but give him credit, he was aggressive and pushing like mad.
ANd rock needs big shows like ELP, not mopey turds like Linkin Park and Korn and all that.

I saw that FACE VALUE making of DVD, good interviews. Phil even plays some of the drum parts on it (recent footage, not even pro mic'ed, just the camera mic). Why the heck did he switch to DW? He was the Gretsch poster boy.
I listened to a lot of that stuff you guys are mentioning when I was younger too. He's a great drummer. EASY LOVER (with Phillip Bailey) has some great drums parts too.
I don't think he switched and I have yet o see anything to say he did. My feeling is it was a rented kit.
I haven't seen anything either. I know that Gretsch built him a double headed kit awhile back....If he did,it's news to me.
